In a Facebook post, State Minister Akis Skertsos attacked the opposition to, as he describes it, “frivolous or deliberately constructed” confusion between political and criminal responsibility, which leads to overtly demonized political opponents.
Mr. Skertsos begins with a historical example – the Nazi ideology and the concept of collective responsibility that led to the Holocaust – to emphasize the basic principles of modern rule of law: the presumption of innocence and the denial of family or collective responsibility.
As he points out: “That is why in the core of the modern rule of law and every modern democracy there are two indelible principles: the first is the presumption of innocence […]. The second is that there is no collective or family responsibility for a crime. “
Exercising direct criticism of the opposition and especially those who identify themselves as “progressive”, he notes that they often slip “in total complaint”, reaching the point of describing political opponents as “thieves”, “smugglers” or even “criminal members”.

“What was the womb of Nazism? The complete thinking and the deep racist position that someone else, in this case a whole people – the Jews – are responsible for the suffering of the Germans in the interwar and must be punished for them. The crematoriums of 6 million dead Jews, from children to the elderly, were the tragic end that would accompany humanity forever.
That is why in the core of the modern rule of law and every modern democracy there are two indelible principles: the first is the presumption of innocence -that is, the one who accuses someone of a crime must prove his accusations himself. And not the accused he did not do what he is accused of.
The second is that there is no collective or family responsibility for a crime. If your father or son steals this does not automatically mean that you are a thief.
These elementary and self -evident ones should be more often remembered by the domestic opposition, and especially those who identify themselves as progressive politicians. That is, those who are in the face of total thought, the reason of hatred, the racism and the shame of society, which, however, are increasingly slipping into totalitarian, denunciation.
To say clearly: the frivolous or intent confusion that leads to the identification of politics with criminal responsibility by calling political opponents from “thieves” to “smugglers”, and from “murderers” to “members of the criminal organization” can not be a democratic position.
Criminalizing the political life of the place is a deeply reactionary position that refers to other dark times and certainly has no place in a democracy.
Unfortunately, it testifies in the most eloquent way and something else: the complete political weakness of the opposition to form a positive and realistic alternative proposal. “
