A solution to a major financial problem of amateur sports clubs in the island areas are given by the Ministries of Sport and Shipping.
As announced today, more specifically, Ministry of Maritime and Island Policyin cooperation with the ministry of sportsdecides the free movement of all amateur sports clubs, with subsidized ships on its 77 routes «barren line», from January 1, 2026.
This is an important step to strengthen sports on the islands, which is expected to make it significantly facilitated for the movement of their teams in competitions at all levels.

The Minister of Sport, Yiannis Broutsisafter his meeting on this issue with the Deputy Minister of Maritime and Island Policy, Stefanos Gika, stressed: «Today is a special day for sports in our islands and a personal justification of our long -standing policy to recognize the difficulties of islanders and sports. Thanks to the heart of the Minister of Maritime and Island Policy, Vassilis Kikilia, Deputy Minister Stefanos Gikas and Secretary General Vangelis Kyriazopoulos, for the excellent cooperation and satisfaction of a just and chronic request. “
And continued: ‘This initiative essentially supports the island sports, it concerns about 650 amateur clubs, registered in E–Kouros (10% of the total territory) and nearly 35,000 athletes and athletes! It removes one of the biggest obstacles that have been facing the Aegean and Ionian unions over time: the high cost of their movement. I was committed, before I even took over the portfolio of Sport, as a MP of Cyclades, that all these clubs would not be alone in the race they give to the development of sport. ”
“And we do it in steady steps: From last year, by institutionalizing the island as a factor in increasing the strengthening of sports clubs by distributing the bets of bets and now with their free movements. We continue, with knowledge and strategic planning, to strengthen sports in the region“He concluded.
For his part, Deputy Minister of Maritime and Island Policy, Stefanos Gikas, said:
«Today’s decision of the Council of Ferry Transport (SUS) with the acceptance of a timeless demand of sports agencies and local communities of our islands, which was so strongly supported by Sports Minister Yiannis Broutsis, is undoubtedly a particularly positive development for the development of sports in Greece.
The approval of the proposal by the Minister, Vassilis Kikilia and the positive opinion of the members of the SAS, opens the way and facilitates thousands of athletes and athletes, creating a favorable environment to further strengthen our sport. We are solving another fixed demand of our islanders.
The government of Kyriakos Mitsotakis shows her sensitivity and reacts listening to the demands and proposals of society».
