On Monday (2.6.2025) the Greek delegation is expected to go to Cairo in an effort to avoid the worst for the Sinai to Egypt.
According to Maximus sources, Cairo will initially go to a technical delegation from Greece, and then if necessary, a technical meeting will be scheduled. The goal of the Greek side is the finding institutional solutionin order to guarantee the rights of the monks of Sinai Monastery.
In addition, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and the Egyptian President al -Sisi had already agreed to maintain its only religious regime Monastery of St. Catherine of Sinai.
The deal had been reached since December, but the Egyptian side was delaying its signature, and according to a Sunday daily report, al -Sisi’s government was waiting for the court ruling last Wednesday.
The court ruling shall, in the second instance, consider issues related to the ownership status of the monastery’s installations and land. However, only part of the decision has become known.
OR decision has two aspectsaccording to the same report: it provides that the monastic community can use the facilities for the exercise of religious rituals for as long as it is present in the monastery and under Archbishop Diaman. It also predicts that all spaces are considered archaeological and are supervised by the Supreme Council of Antiquities, as well as a number of properties directly to the Egyptian state.
These include the large gardens outside the walls of the monastery, on which it depends on its supply, the gardens of Saints Saranda, where the springs are located, with what it entails, the gardens of Saint Anargyroi with the ancient olive groves from which the olive oil is produced, the olive oil of the monastery, where the olive oil is produced. John of the Scale, considered a landmark of particular religious importance.
Behind the decision seems to be the pursuit of touristing the area without – according to the Sinai community – to maintain the monastic character. After all, the claims began in 2015 when it began to burst the tourist interest in the area.
The Greek side is now trying to ensure that the court ruling, after the court ruling, agreed on the Sinai Monastery between Al Sisi and Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
The highest level agreement is the basis on which the Greek side will go to Cairo, to examine whether interventions can be made, after the new given given by the court ruling, which is now cited by the Egyptian side, but without overturning its philosophy.
The aim for the Greek side is not to alter the worship and historical space and its pilgrimage.
