Serbia gives ‘green light’ to Donald Trump’s son-in-law to build skyscraper on NATO-bombed GES building

With a new special law in Serbiathe historic building of the General Staff of the Army, which had been bombed by the NATO in 1999.

The Serbian parliament has approved a special law (Lex specialis) for the complex of buildings of the General Staff of the Army that was damaged during the NATO bombings.

This law overrides general law and allows the demolition of the building despite the fact that it is a monument of architectural heritage, paving the way for its reconstruction, which is extremely convenient for Donald Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, who in early 2024 expressed his intention to build two skyscrapers with a luxury hotel, apartments and business premises.

Reactions from the opposition

The Serbian opposition has announced demonstrations if the demolition of the GES building begins.

Since Jared Kushner’s plans became known, there have been frequent protests demanding that the building be rebuilt as it was before the bombings.

This is what the majority of the population wants according to polls conducted in the recent past. Giving space to Donald Trump’s son-in-law is also seen as an affront to the victims of the bombing since the US led the NATO air campaign against Yugoslavia in 1999.
