Sebastian Lecorni resigned today, a few hours after the appointment of his new cabinet, after allies and enemies threatened to overthrow his government.
His resignation was not expected and has no precedent and marks another depth of the political crisis in France. The prices of the French shares fell as much as the euro, with the new resignation.
After weeks of consultations with parties from all over the political spectrum, Lecorne, a close ally of President Emanuel Macron, appointed his ministers yesterday, and the cabinet was to meet for the first time this afternoon.
But the composition of the new cabinet has caused anger in opponents and allies, who thought it was either too much or not right enough, raising questions about how long it could last, at a time when France is in a deep political crisis with no team having a majority in a fragmented parliament.
Lekorni resigned to Macron this morning.
“Mr. Sebastian Lekorni resigned from his government to the President of the Republic, who accepted it,” the Elise Press Office said.
French politics is becoming increasingly unstable after Macron’s re -election in 2022 as no party or group has a parliamentary majority.
Macron’s decision to call early parliamentary elections last year was a crisis leading to an even more fragmented parliament. Lekorni, appointed just last month, was Macron’s fifth prime minister in two years.
