Once again, former Prime Minister Antonis Samaras focuses with an article on NEWS on national issues and foreign policy, arguing that Greece, in a period of geopolitical rearrangements, remains inactive and absent, failing to exploit the challenges and opportunities. In his article, Antonis Samaras points out that the international system is in the phase of rapid changes, with the emergence of a new hybrid bipolar model between the US and China, which also incorporates elements of tripleism with the presence of Russia. At the same time, regional forces such as India, Pakistan, Brazil and Turkey are gaining more autonomy, forming an unstable and extreme competitive environment.
According to Samaras, Greece has abandoned its active foreign policy, retreating to critical national issues. He accuses the government of passive attitude in contacts with major international players, such as Germany and Italy, noting that, instead of defending national interests, it is excessive.
It typically mentions the recent visit of the prime minister to Germany, where, despite Chancellor Mertz’s challenges for defense cooperation with Turkey, the Greek side did not react vigorously. At the same time, it criticizes the absence of a reaction to the Italian stance, despite the involvement of the Italian Hellenic Train in the Tempe tragedy.
He also claims that Greece does not take advantage of geopolitical opportunities in the Eastern Mediterranean region, as evidenced by the weakening of energy cooperation with Cyprus and Israel, as well as its absence from international negotiations on the Cyprus issue. At the same time, it refers to the challenges by Turkey, such as the illegal occupation of territories in Cyprus and the threats to the Greek EEZ, noting that Greece does not raise strong resistance.
