“We must protect ourselves from our enemies, but also because it is fair to be equated with the United States,” he said Mark Rutte on Tuesday (23.10.2025), at a press conference at the meeting of the meeting NATOregarding the new goal of increasing defense spending to 5% of Member States’ GDP.
Spain opposed the measure and was eventually excluded from the new defense spending target, as NATO allies agreed to increase investment from 2.7% of GDP set last year. Mark Rutte also praised Trump for his support in Ukraine in his war against Russia and other military operations.
“NATO will become very strong with us,” Trump told reporters on Tuesday, on the sidelines of the UN Summit. “We are with them all the way.”
NATO Secretary -General referred to President Trump as a “dad” after the president’s attack on Israel and Iran to continue the attacks despite the fragile truce agreement.
Before leaving for the NATO summit in the Netherlands on Tuesday, Trump hinted that both countries violated the terms of the agreement and fought so much and hard that they “do not know what the hell are doing”.
“Dad must sometimes use harsh tongue,” Rutte said to describe the use of the US president.
