The delays in completing the Great Sea Interconnector with Turkish threats and objections between the Greek and Cypriot government are brought by a written question to the Commission by the MEP and a member of the Security and Defense Committees and his budget. European parliament Mr. Nicolas Farantouris.
As he points out, ‘the Greece – Cyprus interface with the European electricity grid Through the project Great Sea Interconnector is a decisive step in the energy integration of the European Union.
It is part of the objectives for a greater differentiation of Europe’s energy sources, enhancing supply safety and the consequent need to reduce dependence on imported hydrocarbons. ”
However, as the Greek MEP and professor points out, despite EU economic and political support, the project has been in the last time.
“On the one hand, Turkey is trying to block it with threats to use violence and by raising unfounded allegations of maritime jurisdiction in order to serve its regional strategies.
On the other hand, there are “objections” between the Cypriots and the Greek authorities, the two governments (President of the Republic of Cyprus N. Christodoulides, Minister of Energy S. Papastavrou) and Bodies (ADMIE) as to the perpetrators and in the end of the work.
However, Nikolas Farantouris notes that the completion of the project is of particular importance, beyond the two countries, for the benefit of Europe as a whole. “It is a project of European strategic importance, which strengthens the internal energy market, strengthens regional security and for the first time energy Cyprus with the rest of the Union, which is why the EU has supported it economically and politically.”
In view of this, N. Farantouris calls on the European Commission to intervene to ensure the speed of completion of the project. It also calls for it to be informed how the Union intends to face military Turkish threats against a strategic European project.

The Greece – Cyprus – Israel electric interconnection is one of the largest submarine electricity projects worldwide.
With Great Sea Interconnector, Cyprus’s national electricity grid (and then Israel) will acquire a “green”, reliable and two -way underwater interconnection with Greece and the rest of Europe.
