PPC Group: Start of construction of a new battery station (BESS) in Amyntaio

Investments in the critical area of storage energy the Group continues PPCstarting the construction of a new Electrochemical Energy Storage Station, BESS, in Amyntaio in the area of AIS Amyntaio.

This new station, which is being built by PPC Group’s 100% subsidiary, PPC Renewables, will consist of batteries with a total installed capacity of 50 MW and a capacity of 200 MWh and will be able to supply the electricity system with a power of 50 MW for 4 hours.

For the construction of the new BESS station, liquid-cooled battery arrays, innovative LFP technology, will be used, maximizing both the energy used and safety during operation.

The construction of the new storage station begins, while the construction of two more electrochemical energy storage (BESS) stations is already underway in Western Macedonia, in the areas of AIS Kardias and AIS Melitis, with a total installed capacity of 98 MW and a capacity of 196 MWh.

The role played by the energy storage units for the system is extremely important, as they aim to support the operation of the adjacent photovoltaic plants and contribute to the stability of the electricity system, optimizing the management of the production of the Renewable Energy Sources plants, maximizing their degree of contribution and making the most of the electricity generation potential from RES.

In this context, PPC Group has already announced that it will build 860 MW of energy storage projects in the region of Western Macedonia. In total, these projects will create over 1,300 jobs during construction and hundreds during operation.

Among the energy storage projects, the two pumped storage projects stand out, the “natural batteries” with the use of two lakes at an altitude difference between them. This is the project at the Kardias mine, with a production capacity of 320 MW for 8 hours, and the project at the Notiou Pedi mine with a production capacity of 240 MW for 12 hours, for which the licensing works have been completed.

In addition to the storage projects currently being implemented in Greece, a BESS unit with a nominal power of 25 MW and a capacity of 55 MWh is already being built in Bulgaria.

The deputy managing director of RES Group PPC, Konstantinos Mavros, emphasized that “the energy storage projects that are already being implemented in our country will determine the future of the energy system. These investments will ensure the best possible use of production from Renewable Energy Sources and, in addition, the stability of the electricity system in our country, but also in the entire European Continent. PPC is also a pioneer in this process, as the Group’s investment plan includes significant investments in energy storage systems.”
