“Positive context” in US-China trade talks ahead of Trump-Xi meeting

Trade talks between China and the US in Malaysia over the weekend allowed for a good atmosphere ahead of the meeting between US President Donald Trump and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping, the US Treasury Secretary said today (26.10.2025). Scott Bessent.

“I would describe (this discussion) as constructive, thorough and in-depth. It enables us to move forward and prepare for the leaders’ meeting in a very positive context,” Besent told reporters in Kuala Lumpur.

He also stressed that the final decision on whether or not to extend the Washington-Beijing trade truce rests “with President Trump,” who is scheduled to meet with Xi on Thursday in South Korea.
