Piraeus: Themistocles coast is transformed

An important work regeneration is to be implemented in Piraeuswith the aim of bioclimatic upgrading of the coastal front of Themistocles. The investment is expected to radically change the image of the area, enhancing its aesthetics and functionality.

The redevelopment project concerns the construction of a single network of sidewalks and bicycles, to allow the seamless pedestrian and bicycle movement in the area of Piraeus. It has a budget of EUR 18,991,935.48 and funding from the European Union’s recovery and resilience fund.

The widening of the sidewalks is one of the main interventions to ensure greater safety and comfort in pedestrians, while creating a fully organized bike path that promotes sustainable mobility in the area. The free spaces will be reshaped and create stops and rest zones, thereby offering pleasant spaces for residents and visitors. There will also be a new parking setting in order to better use the space available.

In addition to interventions in the public space, the project also includes significant improvements in the area’s infrastructure. A new rainwater rainwater system will be installed to prevent flooding phenomena, thereby improving weather management.

At the same time, lighting in the area will be upgraded by the use of modern luminaires, which will enhance pedestrian and cyclists during the evening hours. Urban equipment will be renewed, with the placement of new checkers, trash bins and other elements that will enhance the functionality of the space and the overall aesthetics of the area.

Particular emphasis is placed on increasing greenery, with new planting trees and plants, to enhance the bioclimatic dimension of regeneration and create a more enjoyable and healthy environment. In addition, the project includes special infrastructure to serve people with disabilities, ensuring the full accessibility of the space for all citizens.

Piraeus is an area with a rich history and a strong cultural heritage, hosting important monuments, such as the ancient long walls and the tomb of Themistocles. Reconstruction aims not only to aesthetic and functional upgrading of the coastal front, but also on the creation of a modern walk, leisure and sport. These interventions are expected to offer a new identity in the region, highlighting its cultural characteristics and providing a space for the development of tourism and the local economy.

The procedure for the project is already underway through a competition, following the procedures provided by Greek law on public procurement. The competition is being held by open procedure, allowing any interested parties to participate, and the assignment will be based on the criterion of “more economically advantageous”, which combines the best quality and price relationship.

The deadline for submitting bids is until April 23, 2025, and the contractor selected will undertake the implementation of the project, which must be completed within 12 months of the signing of the contract. This project is expected to contribute decisively to the upgrading of the area, giving new impetus to Piraeus and improving the daily lives of thousands of citizens.

With its completion, this project will provide a modern and environmentally friendly coastal front, creating new opportunities for the local community and contributing to the enhancement of the sustainable development of the Athenian Riviera.
