Phone scams with the “Caller ID Spoofing” method: What to watch for citizens

For new telephone fraud by “Caller ID Spoofing” method warns Greek police the citizens. Her perpetrators scam they call allegedly on the part of the Cybercrime Prosecution Directorate or as partners to steal personal data.

As announced today (01.04.2025) by the Greek Police for this new fraud by method «Caller ID Spoofing»sophisticated, who are pretending to call from the Directorate of Cybercrime or Affiliates of the Service, try to deceive unsuspecting citizens or to steal personal data.

According to complaints made to ELAS, the perpetrators appear to make calls from phone number 2144027860, which belongs to the call center of the cybercrime, but is not able to outbound calls.

To do this, they use the method «Caller ID Spoofing»by which, through the use of mainly services Voice over IP (VoIP), falsify the information displayed in the recipient’s call recognition to convince them that the calls come from credible organizations or companies, while concealing their true identity.

In this case, they claim that they call on behalf of the Cybercrime Directorate or as partners, and are trying to deceive the citizens, on the pretext that there are accounts in their name with cryptocurrencies and that they will help to recover.

In this context, ELAS calls citizens:

– Be very careful with telephone calls that appear to come from public organizations or companies (eg police, interpol, banks, etc.) and the interlocutor calls for sensitive personal or banking data.

– If they accept a similar call or during a call they suspect that they are trying to deceive them, finish the call immediately and confirm its authenticity through the official carrier on a case -by -case basis.

– Immediately inform the Police, even in the event of an attempted fraud against them.
