Peru: Strong waves ‘hit’ the coasts – Authorities close more than 90 ports

The Peru closed today (12.04.2025) 91 of its 121 ports, after warning of abnormally strong waves On its beach, the country’s Navy announced.

Powerful waves that hit Peru’s coasts on Friday will continue by Wednesday, as the naval authorities warned. The phenomenon is created off the coast of Chile and mainly affects the areas of the coast of Peru to the south.

Today, the phenomenon was “moderately intensified, with intense gusts, and is expected to be relieved by Wednesday,” frigate Enrique Barea, the Navy’s hydrographic direction, told state television.

“Port authorities are watching to see if the ports should be closed or not,” he added.

The Navy also recommended that port and fishing activities were suspended and asked citizens not to go to the sea.

In Lima, due to the sea overflow, parts of the Gulf motorway were closed by order of the authorities.

At the end of 2024 and last January, parts of the coast of Peru and Chile were affected by a strong ripple and very large waves.
