New diplomatic crisis in Latin America: its parliament Peru approved on Thursday (06.11.2025) a resolution declaring the president of of MexicoClaudia Sheinbaum, “persona non grata” (“unwanted person”) for “unacceptable interference in the internal affairs” of the Andean country.
According to the official announcement, the Peruvian authorities accuse the president of Mexico that since taking office she has adopted a “hostile attitude” towards Peru.
This decision is taken three days after the interruption of diplomatic relations between Peru and Mexico. On Monday, Peru’s government had announced the break, reacting to political asylum granted by Mexico City to former Peruvian Prime Minister Betsy Chavez, who is being prosecuted for her alleged involvement in the failed coup attempt of former President Pedro Castillo in December 2022.
The Mexican government has yet to publicly react to the decision, which marks a new episode of tension in Latin America around the issue of political asylum and respect for national sovereignty.
