Papathanassis: Funding NSRF Local Action Plans under the Grecoislands Initiative for 39 Small Islands

By decision of the Deputy Minister of Finance Nikos Papathanassis, the NSRF 2021 – 2027 is funded by the act of “the preparation of local action plans in the context of the Greco Islands Strategic Initiative”, which concerns 39 small islands (100 to 3,500 permanent residents) of the North Aegean, South Aegean and Ionian Islands Regions.

In particular, through this act, the Municipalities of the Small Islands, which will participate in the GRECO ISLANDS initiative, will detail their local action plans, which will reflect the vision, strategy and business plan of each island for:

  • the energy transition,
  • sustainable resource management,
  • environmental protection,
  • Green Entrepreneurship and Innovation,
  • the digital transformation and
  • the empowerment of human resources.

The act, with a budget of around € 1.5 million, is co-financed by the NSRF 2021-2027 and implemented by MAA SA. As a beneficiary, with co-judges the 33 municipalities of the 39 small islands.

Significant financial support is expected to be implemented for the implementation of the projects, from the “Environment and Climate Change” programs and a “fair development transition” with a complementary financial contribution of the three NSRF Regional Programs 2021-2027 North Aegean, South Aegean and Ionian Islands.

Deputy Minister of National Economy and Finance Nikos Papathanassis said: “This decision is part of the general strategic planning of the government with the aim of sustainable development with social cohesion in every corner of the country. The self -evident national significance of this initiative, as it addresses small islands with up to 3500 permanent residents, is identified with the transition of these critical areas to a sustainable, green and durable future. It is combined, with the increase in investment, jobs and incomes, ultimately with the stay and progress of their residents, especially young people, in their place, making our common vision for Greece worthwhile. “

The Secretary General of the NSRF, Vassiliki Pantelopoulou stressed: “With the official start of local action plans, we are opening a new path to the country’s small islands towards a future with energy autonomy, sustainable development and social cohesion. “Greco Islands” is more than just a development initiative – it is a new model for Greece in the islands of the future. “
