The Minister of Environment and Energy, Stavros Papastavrouspeaking to Action24responded to the objections of the President of SYRIZA, Socrates Famellou regarding the Greek state’s share of the profits from potentially commercially exploitable deposits.
“Mr. Famellos said that I am “misleading” by saying that the state’s percentage will be 40%. With a simplistic calculation he found 3% – how much does ELPE have? The state owns 10% of the joint venture, 30% of ELPE, so it will get 3% of the profits. This is not true. In fact, the State, as applicable in these contracts, will get 20% income tax, 5% regional tax, there is a category of rents/royalties that starts from 4% and reaches 15%, and in addition to the amounts stipulated in the contract, the State ends up receiving a percentage between 38-40%, as long as the deposit is commercially exploitable. Mr. Famousos said we will get 3%. You will tell me, they are technical matters, conventions, the man may not have known. But come on, this contract has been signed by Mr. Famellos himself! Because the ExxonMobil contract is Total’s old 2018 contract, which bears his signature. So: either he is completely ignorant, because he does not know what he is signing, or he is a defiant slanderer, when he tells me that I am misleading about something he himself has signed. Somewhere we have to end the left of hypocrisy and slander. We are not allowed to give wrong information to the citizen” said the energy minister.
Regarding the statements of the lady Diamantopoulou about “secret diplomacy” and agreements that are “not disclosed”, Mr. Papastavrou commented: “The agreement with ExxonMobil it has already passed the Parliament in 2018, obviously he knows it. The agreement with Chevron, once completed, will go through the Court of Auditors, where it will be submitted in November, and then it will be ratified by the Parliament. Both agreements must pass through the Parliament. As for the agreement with Ukraine, he should know that it is not interstate, but between DEPA and Naftogaz. So all this about secret diplomacy and opacity shows a miserable attitude, an inability to understand the big picture, that these are national successes that increase national wealth and belong to all Greeks. And they didn’t happen overnight – it started in 2011 with Maniati, 2014 with Samara – Venizelos. This is an institutional relay race and it is a mistake to include it in the issues of micro-political opposition. Some things are national and above.”
In particular, for the agreement with Ukraine commented: “While we are talking, some people are being killed, hospitals have no electricity, no heat. The debate and micropolitics are good, but the fact that Greece was a country that said from the beginning that it would help Ukraine with energy supply with its companies is very important. After all, our country knows what invasion means, we have experienced it in Cyprus. In the short term, the first cargoes will go up in January-February-March, while the long-term deal starts from 2030 onwards.”
Mr. Papastavrou explained that, as long as the mining that will take place in 18 months is successful, our national wealth increases, which means that after the start of production, billions will enter our country, they will be public resources, they will allow us to support social policy, to have electricity at a better price, to take the country to another level. “On one condition,” said the Minister “the deposit must be commercially exploitable. The largest listed oil company in the world says I want to move in 18 months to Block II and we turn a blind eye? It’s not possible.”
Regarding the possibility of tensions in the plots south of it CreteMr. Papastavrou replied: “Libya and Greece have plots where both respect the middle line in practice. In its declarations, it may create – just like Turkey – tensions, but during the exploitation of its plots, it does not display the illegal Turkish-Libyan memorandum. How could he do otherwise, if he wants to take part in the oil world becoming and ignore the international rules? No one can do that, she would be left on the sidelines. Especially Libya, whose public revenue from hydrocarbons is 90% of its state budget. She would not be able to play with her public revenues.”
Mr. Papastavrou described them as “impermissible”. statements Zakharovasaying that “Greece has an inalienable right on how to develop its defense industry and it is not up to her or anyone else. The entire content of the statements is very sad: no mention of the Turkish invasion, of the stabilizing role of Greece in the Balkans, shows that it treats international politics with empathy, statements that we categorically reject.”
For his book Alexis Tsipras said: “I have read several statements by Mr. Tsipras about me and my family, I have had enough. It was a period of toxicity, criminalization of political life, a period in which they saw their political opponent as the enemy and the political struggle as a process of exterminating the enemy. In order to do rebranding, you have to change, apart from the packaging, the content, which goes through self-criticism”.
