Hydrocarbon surveys in Greece and energy security in the wider Eastern Mediterranean region were discussed, inter alia, at the meeting held by the Minister of Environment and Energy, Stavros Papastavrou Saturday (10.5.2025) in the US with the member of Congress and Vice President of the Subcommittee of Energy, Randy Weber.

“We talked about international developments that affect the energy market, but also about the strategic depth of Greek -American relations. I thank him for the constructive discussion and I am waiting for him in Greece to continue it! “

According to RIS sources, the discussion focused on five axes:

  1. Hydrocarbon research in Greece and specifically in the maritime areas south of the Peloponnese and Crete, which have similar geological characteristics to Mediterranean points where significant deposits have been discovered.
  2. Energy security and differentiation from Russian gas. Greece’s role as a channel for the supply of the region and Ukraine was highlighted by utilizing liquefied natural gas infrastructure, which is also used by US companies.
  3. Trilateral cooperation – Greece, Cyprus, Israel with the US in energy.
  4. Legislative Initiatives in Congress, USA for the Eastern Mediterranean: Specifically, the Eastern Mediterranean Energy and Security Partnership Enhancement Act bill was discussed, which enhances cooperation with the United States.
  5. Network development and green transition, promoting cooperation for investment in renewable energy and hydrogen infrastructure.
