The Hungarian Prime Minister threatens to exercise a veto Viktor Orban in the next seven years budget of the EU if Brussels does not release EU funds currently blocked for Hungary, he said today (6.12.2024) on Hungarian state radio.
In order for the EU budget to be approved, all member states must agree. “I can safely say that I will not contribute (to the approval of the budget)” if the still blocked funds for Hungary are not included in the next long-term budget, Viktor Orban said. He has also put pressure on the EU Commission with veto threats on several occasions.
The EU Commission is currently still blocking almost twelve billion euros of funds intended for Hungary, as well as billions of euros to help the country from Covid19.
Brussels wants to release these funds only if Hungary implements further reforms to strengthen the rule of law. Negotiations on the next long-term EU budget from 2028 to 2035 are expected to start in mid-2025
