New Zealand: Fiery inferno in national park – Fire reduced 11,000 acres of greenery to ashes

Gigantic battle of firefighters trying to bring under control the huge fire which has “devoured” its national park New Zealand from Saturday (08.11.2025). So far about 11,000 acres of pristine green have been reduced to ashes.

The fire broke out in Chanhariro National Park in New Zealand. From the moment the flames broke out, authorities rushed to the scene to evacuate the hikers. Yesterday around 40 people were hastily evacuated, while today another 9.

New Zealand has decided to increase firefighting forces with helicopters and aircraft as the site is too inaccessible for ground forces to operate.

“Due to the terrain and the extent of the fire, aerial water drops are a more effective method than ground crews attempting” the front, explained fire chief Craig Gold.

The fire department said that later in the morning there was to be a reconnaissance aircraft flight to determine the extent of the fire. Depending on the picture, it is expected that it will take operations for at least a day to control the fire. It planned to deploy six of its own vehicles and six water tankers in the field.
