The new Outlander will be the first Mitsubishi model to bring the integrated active safety system, e-Assist. It uses radar and a camera to maintain a constant distance from the vehicle in front, but also to alert the driver in the event of an unintentional lane change. The radar is located in the grille and controls the speed of the vehicle in front, as well as the distance from it. It works for a distance of up to 200 m and regardless of weather conditions and whether there is sufficient lighting. The camera is mounted on the top of the windshield and records the lines separating the traffic lanes. It also has a rain sensor, automatically turning on the windshield wipers.
Gathering data from the radar, adaptive cruise control (ACC) and forward collision avoidance (FCM) manage engine power, transmission and brakes to accelerate, decelerate or stop the Outlander. The FCM together with the lane keeping system (LDW) alert the driver audibly and visually of the impending danger.
e-Assist can be fitted to both the conventional Outlander and the plug-in hybrid, which will premiere in a few weeks in Paris and will go on sale in Europe in 2013.
