The ‘hit’ on Temu and Shein
The United States is suspending the exception of “de minimis” that allowed the shipment of low -value goods to the United States without imposing duties, as the White House announced on Wednesday (31/7/25).
According to a decree signed by President Donald Trump, the $ 800 parcels or less shipped to the US outside the International Postal Network will now be subject to “all applicable duties” since August 29, the White House said.
Trump had earlier targeted the parcels from China and Hong Kong, and the White House announced that the recently signed tax and expenditure law was abolishing the legal basis for the de minimis exemption worldwide from July 1, 2027.
“Trump is acting quickly to suspend de minimis exemption in order to tackle national emergency situations and save American lives and businesses now,” the White House said in a newsletter, known as one Big Beautiful Bill.
The goods shipped through the postal system will be subject to one of the two duties: either to a “value duty” equal to the current tariff rate of the country of origin of the package or, for six months, on a specific duty of $ 80 to $ 200, depending on the tax rate.
