Dutch Defense Minister Ank Bielefeld announced her resignation today following the chaotic management of the evacuation operation by the Afghanistan, following in the footsteps of Dutch Foreign Minister Sigrid Kaag.
“I informed my party and the prime minister, Mark Rutte“I will ask the king to accept my resignation,” said Ank Bielefeld, a day after the country’s lawmakers criticized the government for failing to remove Afghan nationals and did not notice the signs of a rapid takeover by the Taliban.
She also assured reporters that she did not want to “hinder the important work” of her colleagues, who are continuing their efforts to remove people from Afghanistan.
Her colleague, Foreign Minister Zigrid Kaag, resigned yesterday after she also came under fire in parliament over the government’s inability to oust Afghan nationals and did not see any signs of the country regaining control of the country.
The two ministers are among the first Western officials to step down and take responsibility for the chaos that reigned between the Taliban takeover of Kabul on August 15 and the withdrawal of US forces in late August.
