One of its most beautiful routes of Athensthis from the beginning Dionysios Areopagitou until the end of Apostle Paul, it will acquire new lighting, in an action to upgrade the capital.
The Municipality of Athens continues to work with the Onassis Foundation in 2025 to implement all the projects that will upgrade the city, this time changing the “scenery” to Dionysiou Areopagitou.
The new lighting brings the signature of Eleftherias Deco.
The Mayor of Athens, Haris Doukas, stated that the upgrade will highlight the historical route and in the next period a bronze sculpture-bench of K.P. Cavafy in honor of the poet.
“The famous pedestrian street of Athens is getting new lighting by the distinguished lighting designer, Eleftherias Deco. It is an aesthetic and functional upgrade, with the assistance of the Onassis Foundation, which highlights the historical route and offers residents and visitors a new experience of the public space overlooking the sacred rock of the Acropolis. In the next period, a bronze sculpture-bench of K.P. Cavafy in honor of the Alexandrian poet, completing the reconstruction of Dionysios Areopagitou. We are upgrading the infrastructure in Athens, respecting our history, for the benefit of all citizens”, said Haris Doukas.
The President of the Onassis Foundation, Antonis S. Papadimitriou, clarified that the “Adopt your city” program aims to highlight the most ordinary streets of Athens.
“The goal of our interventions is to improve the Athenian neighborhood, upgrading everyday life in the most common routes of the city. In this sense, we continue the “Adopt your city” program, in collaboration with the Municipality, with similar interventions in other neighborhoods of the city center, which improve the quality of life, provide a safe environment and comfortable traffic, facilitate access to road network and strengthen the connection of citizens with public space. Within a city that questions and explores, it re-carves its internal borders and allows communication between neighborhoods. It is these routes that inspire the Onassis Foundation, reminding us that the city is actually the individual stories of its inhabitants. We want to listen to them and respond to them,” he said.
The collaboration with the distinguished Greek lighting designer, Eleftheria Deco, who supervised the renewed lighting of the Acropolis in 2020, sets the standard for the aesthetic and functional upgrade of the historic route. The light under the gaze of Deco transforms, in harmony with the environment, one of the most emblematic walks of the city, leaving an imprint that revitalizes the public space.
The Onassis Foundation is also undertaking the redevelopment at the point where the Dionysiou Areopagitou pedestrian street meets Amalia Avenue. The hallmark of this intervention is the bronze sculpture-bench of K. P. Cavafy, which will be placed between the Onassis Library and the Onassis Mandra, a few meters away from the new building of the Cavafy Archive. At the same time, Athens honors the master creator by continuing a European tradition, which, among others, includes the bench of Fernando Pessoa in Lisbon, the bronze statue of James Joyce in Trieste, as well as that of Hans Christian Andersen in Copenhagen.Haris Doukas together with the president of the Onassis Foundation, Antonis S. The initiatives come to be added to the overall interventions that have been carried out in the Municipality of Athens, most recently the creation of a model playground in the Acropolis Garden.
