Meeting in Maximus for the problem of water scarcity
Addressing the problem of water scarcity With a national design is an urgent reformist need highlighted during a meeting today under the prime minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis at the Maximus Mansion.
As part of a meeting on the problem of water scarcity and its main axes it became clear that in the first year, answers to today’s pressing needs should be answered and, in the medium -term horizon, the country should be prepared for the great challenges of the next 30 years.
The prime minister stressed that the water is and will remain a public good and a resource of vital importance and only should be treated.
The meeting was presented with a detailed presentation of the scientific data, which clearly show the magnitude of the problem, due to the climate crisis, in all Mediterranean countries, even taking into account that Europe is the fastest heated continent in the world.
Based on data, our country is ranked 19th in the world in terms of risk of water scarcity. The stomach levels are at historically low levels, and it is indicative that stocks in Attica have decreased more than 50% compared to 2022.
In this context, it was decided a holistic way of dealing with the issue of fragmentation, between different actors that exist today. The government is going to radically change the water management model in the country, a more operating system, with more efficiency and more investment. In this effort, new technologies, as well as complementary ways of producing water, such as desalination, will be exploited.
The five main axes of the design are:
– Water is and will remain a public good, as provided by the Constitution and Council of State Jurisprudence
– Sustainable Water, Irrigation and Sewerage Companies, with a view to accepted costs for all uses
– Holistic design and central management of all necessary projects, small and large
– Ultimate initiative in the next six months, in conjunction with a citizen awareness and awareness campaign
– New technologies and complementary ways of producing water (desalination, recycling and reuse)
The above axes are expected to specialize in the near future.
The design was emphasized that it would also lay the foundations for the implementation of projects already launched or studied. Today more than 1,200 water management and exploitation projects are under way, of which 1,090 relate to water and 237 irrigation.
As noted, these projects are added to the 278 that have already been completed from 2019 until today. However, it became clear that the need for further investment and more coordinated effort to tackle this big, social and national issue is evident.
