The truly impressive political and military parade of Thessaloniki reflects the image of a country that respects and honors the glorious moments of its past, but at the same time is able to look to the future with optimism and self-confidence.
85 years ago the Greeks put aside their differences, united to fight for their freedom and achieved a proud victory. And we are called to pass on this message of unity to the responsibilities of our own generation.
We live in turbulent and difficult times, but the military parade we witnessed today gives us all peace of mind that the Armed Forces are always here to defend this freedom for which our forefathers fought.
The Armed Forces are currently in a process, perhaps the most important transformation in their history, to be able to respond to the great, unique challenges of the times.
And indeed this day, this national holiday of October 28th, is first and foremost dedicated to them and those who do not sleep at night, 365 days a year, so that we can all enjoy the goods of our freedom.
Happy birthday to our Thessaloniki. Happy birthday to Greek women and men all over the world.
