Mitsotakis at Bloomberg Forum: Greece as a stable factor and bridge with Asia

In public discussion at Bloomberg New Economy Forum in Singapore, the Kyriakos Mitsotakis analyzed the progress of the Greek economy, developments in Ukraine, relations with the USA and the role of Greece in Europe-Asia cooperation.

The Prime Minister’s public debate on the future of Europe with Bloomberg News UK editor John Micklethwaite was broadcast live on ertnews.gr.

“Greece has made a remarkable comeback, is generating primary surpluses, the debt is improving, the growth rate is higher than the European average and we have proven that the crisis is in the past. We have demonstrated in Greece that we can have reliable governments”, stressed the Prime Minister.

“Some solutions are European, but the difficult reforms are the national responsibility of each state. We have a stable government, we have a majority in Parliament, our elections will be held in 2027 and the ruling party is ahead by several points. I am optimistic about the performance of the Greek economy. We have problems with the cost of living, but we have delivered on our commitments and the new budget will be passed with relief measures that address accuracy. Unlike other governments, our performance allows us to take support measures without forgetting that we were forced to impose difficult reforms such as in the pension system”, said Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

“Europe woke up to the war in Ukraine”

“We need to learn lessons in order to make decisions,” the Prime Minister said in response to a related question, while clarifying that Trump’s plan to end the war has not been officially communicated to European leaders. “We have made it clear that no agreement can exist without Ukraine. We understand that as Europeans we must support Ukraine financially. I believe that every European country is trying to face its own challenges, but it is up to each country to promote reforms so that there is a common pace”, said Kyriakos Mitsotakis, among others.

“I strongly believe in transatlantic relations”

Asked by John Micklethwaite about Trump’s preferences for authoritarian leaders like Erdogan, the Prime Minister emphasized that the relationship with the US is strong as it is a strategic partner. “It shows that we can work together effectively as in energy. I believe that the goal towards Turkey is to find a way to discuss maritime law without tension. My responsibility is to strengthen the defense capabilities of the country. We have a deterrent attitude towards any country that could threaten our defence.

Greece is a bridge to Asia

Kyriakos Mitsotakis referred to the constructive discussion with the Prime Minister of Singapore, highlighting the common principles and values in the free economy and the rule of law. “I see that there is room for cooperation between Asian countries and Europe. I believe that Singapore has an important role and we would like closer ties with the countries of the Asean group as Greece can act as a bridge”, stressed the Prime Minister.
