His last breath was left on Thursday night, at the age of 72, by the Metropolitan of Corinth, Sikyon, Zemenos, Tarsus and Polypheisms, Mr. Dionysios. The blessed Hierarch was hospitalized in recent days, sealing the brave, many years of battle with the tremendous disease.
His state of health had suffered him for a long time, even leading him to the United States, where he had undergone specialized interventions. Despite his test, he remained active in his pastoral duties, with his latest public operating presence being recorded last May, in the celebrations of Saint John the Russian, in the homonymous pilgrimage in Evia.
A life dedicated to the church
Dimitrios Mandalos was born in Athens in 1952. A graduate of the Athens Theological School and with a postgraduate studies in Thessaloniki, dedicated his life to the Church’s ministry.
He was ordained a deacon in 1974 and a senior in 1979, serving for decades the Holy Metropolis of Chalkida from neuralgic sites, such as the preacher, the Hierarchical Commissioner and the Protector. His work in Euboea was enormous, especially in the field of youth, as he was responsible for the creation of 25 spiritual centers and modern camps in the area.
His ecclesiastical and administrative experience led him to high office in the central administration of the Church of Greece, serving as Deputy General Manager of the Apostolic Ministry and as the Chief of the Holy Synod.
On October 15, 2006, the 89th bishop of this historic Metropolis was ordained Metropolitan of Corinth from the Apostle Paul. His work was characterized by rich writing and social activity, with countless lectures and media interventions.
The Holy Synod is expected to announce the details of the exodus sequence, which is likely to be held on Saturday, as well as the name of the hierarch who will be appointed by the widow’s metropolis until the election of his successor next October.
