Merkel: Politics is not about having fun – with Tsipras we talked honestly

The years of the Greek crisis were remembered once again by Angela MerkelSpeaking about the Greeks, what happened in those difficult years and how she faced this difficult situation.

Speaking to SKAI, former German Chancellor Angela Merkel said she was saddened that the Greek newspapers at the time of the referendum linked her to Nazism. “But politics is nothing to enjoy. The important thing is that I was convinced that Greece can do it, ”he said.

“Sometimes it bothered me that some social groups might have to suffer more than others. But that was a decision of the Greek politicians and I could not intervene. ”

Speaking about the first time he met Alexis Tsipras as a prime minister, he noted that he was concerned because he had previously attacked the troika. “I was waiting for him outside the Chancellor, where they were concentrated leftists and he went and spoke to them before he came to me,” he described.

He added, however, that with Alexis Tsipras “we were not lying, we were honestly chatting.”

Angela Merkel once again appeared incomprehensible to her movements about Greece, stressing that her handling was right.

“No, I wouldn’t apologize because I thought something had to change and that I couldn’t change Greek politics. This had to be done internally. But I would like to say that I understand and thank all those who raised such a burden to stay in the eurozone and thus offered a good service to Europe. We stayed united in this difficult situation. So I wanted to thank you and say that I was absolutely aware of what many people were going through, ”he said.
