‘Today’s celebration of International Museum Day, on “Museums and Societies in Lasting Change”, It gives us the opportunity to discuss the role of museums today.
In the modern world, Museums perform a complex and demanding social role. To respond, they must evolve with society, responding to its needs. Their impact depends on their integration into everyday life and public dialogue: to train, to inspire, to transmit knowledge, but also to give birth to emotion and empathy.
At the same time, must ensure their functional efficiency and viability, combining adaptability and durability. The economic, functional and operational viability, autonomy and sustainability of museums and their impact on society are directly related to their strong reflexes:
How quickly and effectively, can they design and implement new strategies? A venture that presupposes flexibility, open spirit, boldness and determination. Above all, knowledge, experience, proper analysis and valuation of the internal and external environment, through a reliable and functional universal self -assessment process.
In 2020, the Ministry of Culture, in order to meet the modern demands, introduced its procedures, the “Greek System of Recognition and Certification of Museums”, By creating the integrated information system of identification and certification of Greek museums.
It is an important reform, so that the Ministry of Culture, with the provision of know -how and resources, to actively assist both public and private museums, to identify and address weaknesses and problems, to consolidate good practices, planning and implementing reform and modernization actions.
The museum landscape in our country is radically changing. The Ministry of Culture, from 2019 to the present day, It has attributed to Greek society 26 new or fully renovated museums.
From the National Gallery and the National Museum of Contemporary Art in Athens, the Archaeological Museum of Aretus in Chalkida, the timeless museum of Tilos, The Archaeological Museum in Polygyros and the Petralona Cave Museum In Halkidiki, as the Multicenter Museum in Aigai, the Archaeological Museums in Alexandroupolis and Samothrace, the museums of Agios Nikolaos, Chania and Mesara in Crete, the Archaeological Museum of Delos and the Archaeological Collection of Sami in Kefalonia.
