A scheduled meeting took place late Tuesday afternoon between MEP Nikola Farantouri and UN Secretary -General Antonio Guterres at the UN headquarters in New York.
THE Nicolas Farantouris represents the European parliament as the author and rapporteur of the report on the world Sustainable Development Objectives in International Inter -Parliamentary Conference held at the UN this week.
Last week, the European Parliament voted in favor of the Farantouri report with a wide majority of 70% (422 votes against 672 votes) on sustainable development goals on the planet, society and the economy.
The meeting emphasized the commitment to international law and the need for it strictly implemented by all members of the global community.
In his statements by the UN shortly after meeting with Antonio Guterres, European MEP and Professor of European Law Nicolas Farantouris said:
“We had the opportunity with the UN Secretary -General to talk about the big issues of the world community at a critical turning point in history and the Organization and to confirm our commitment to the principles of international legal order. Following the folding of the US, the EU and the 27 Member States are now becoming the largest financiers of the organization and therefore the guardians of its operation. ”
As Mr Farantouris noted, “for this reason the EU position can be heard even louder. And this position can only be the strict application of international law. ” Continuing, Mr Farantouris explained that Turkey’s action violated international law and referred, inter alia, the threat of war, the illegal military occupation of Cyprus, the illegal Turkish-Libyan memorandum and, in the end, the promotion of the electrical connection of Turkey.
In relation to the above issues, Nikolas Farantouris said: “By officially representing the EU and not exclusively Greece, but with the mind always focused on my homeland, I ask the EU as a community of law to claim faithful observance of international law. And as the main UN funder, to require the UN robust intervention when it is violated. ” “Anyone who makes the table has the first word on the menu,” he said.

The UN and the European Union
