Mediterranean diet protects the gums, revealing British researchers

Known for its benefits to heart and longevity, the Mediterranean It is now emerging as a weapon for oral health. According to a study by King’s College, published in the Journal of Periodontology, those who follow this dietary model have less gingivitis and lower levels of inflammation.

Researchers at King’s College London attended 200 British patients who underwent dental examinations, hematological analyzes and reported details of their eating habits. Those who had fruits, vegetables, legumes and olive oil – basic elements of the Mediterranean diet – had lower inflammation markers.

In contrast, frequent consumption of red meat and the deviation from the Mediterranean model were associated with increased inflammation and more severe gingivitis.

Already recognized for reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease, neurodegenerative disorders and certain forms of cancer, the Mediterranean diet thus confirms its central role in holistic health prevention – even for gums.
