In a market “scanning” the market, says Mr Korkidis, in the first quarter we see an increase in turnover (turnover) in total businesses by 7.5%, a 5% increase in trade and only 2.5% in retail companies, which is lower than 3.1% of inflation. Consumption also corresponds to the retreat of retailing to 37% of total turnover.
Paying the Easter Gift to private sector workers, to the Great Fourth, which exceeds € 1 billion this year, always gives the extra boost to buying traffic. Although much of the gift this year, it is going to be directed to the Easter table food costs, consumer markets for gifts, toys and candles for children, clothes and shoes are expected to boost the turnover of retail businesses, as well as their residence services.
This year, the Greek Orthodox Easter coincides with the Catholic and is essential and practical within the tourist season in which the increased tourist traffic from abroad should be taken into account with the appropriate “imported consumption” that is expected to be created.
Easter basket
The “Easter basket” with 50 different products and only with the supermarkets will be in place until Saturday, April 19, with the aim of keeping them at a reasonable level and preventing “ups and downs” in prices.

As she explains, 5 out of 10 consumers traditionally make their purchases on Holy Week after paying the gift, 4 out of 10 on Saturday of Lazarus and Sundays, while only 1% earlier.
With the prices to date, mainly in domestic lambs from 13-17 euros per kilo and 40% of chocolate products, estimates start at 190 euros for 6-8 people and exceed 220 euros. It is a fact, Mr. Korkidis points out, that this year we saw from the big chocolate companies a 50% shrinkage of chocolate eggs due to a 100% increase in cocoa price.
Finally, the president stressed: “The Easter turnover will not resurrect the market, but will certainly stimulate it. We fully understand the climate in the market and the psychology of the consumer, as well as the fact that for 5 out of 10 households, available income with difficulty covering their monthly obligations.
The purchasing power, despite new wage increases by 6% since April 1, has been limited by inflationary increases and has changed many consumer habits. But what does not change and remains a constant value for the Easter market is the preservation of customs with the traditional gifts of parents and gods in children and their baptisms.
