Seven practitioners – psychiatrists, psychiatrist, psychologist and nurses – are tried in Buenos Aires for “homicide by intent” about his death Diego Maradona.
World football legend and a symbol in Argentina until his death, Diego Maradona died of a cardiopulmonary crisis in a private home in Tigre, where he recovered after neurosurgical surgery for hematoma on the head.
For this potentially fatal negligence, these people face 8 to 25 years in prison in a trial that is expected to last until July, with two hearings a week.
The defendants deny any responsibility for death, while defense lawyers argued that police officers had no medical knowledge to authorize them, to decide on hospitalization.
The four police officers to file were the first of about one hundred and witnesses to appear, including specialists, family, friends and doctors of Maradona over the years.
Officers who were first in the room where Diego Maradona died in 2020 expressed their surprise, testifying to the trial of the death of football legendary deaths, stating that they “saw no medical information” in the alleged medical room.
“I didn’t see any medical object in the room. I did not see serums that I think should exist during a home hospital, “said Officer Lucas Farias, one of the police officers who filed the third day of the trial with seven health professionals in a court in San Isis to the north of Buenos Aires.
“It was not a hospital bed, it was a common, common mattress and there was no defibrillator,” Officer Lucas Borge, who was on the site, in Tigre (north of Buenos Aires) on November 25, 2020, testified.
Lucas Borge said he was called around 13:00 from the house and sent Lucas Faria’s deputy, who a few minutes later informed him that Diego Maradona died.
When he arrived, Borge said he was surprised by the “number of people” in the patio of the house, stating that he had encountered Maradona’s sisters, ex -husband, daughters, nurse and psychiatrist.
At the start of the trial, prosecutor Patricio Ferrari denounced in his opening statement a “murder”, a recovery that had become a “horror theater” and a medical team where “no one did what he had to do”. He kept a photo of Diego Maradona, dead in his bed, with his stomach swollen.
Police confirmed this image of Maradona “with a very inflated belly, ready to explode”, wearing a t -shirt and shorts. “I was surprised to see Maradona like that. I never thought I was going to find this image, with everything it represents, “Farias said.
