New Democracy MEP Manolis Kefalogiannis has submitted a question to the European Commission on reports that the Eastern Libyan government plans to allow Turkish companies to conduct Seismic surveys in sea zones reaching up to south of Crete.
Mr Kefalogiannis, who is chairman of the EU-Turkey Mixed Parliamentary Committee, stresses that these actions, both from the eastern and western Libya, follow a common strategy based on the turquoisewhich is illegal and has been condemned by the three institutions of the European Union.
In his question, the MEP points out that these acts violate the sovereign rights other states and are not compatible with sea law, so they cannot have legal implications for third states.
In detail the question:
“All three institutions of the European Union have strongly condemned the illegal and invalid pseudo -duccaneal memorandum, which violates the rights of third countries, does not comply with the law of the sea and cannot have legal consequences for third states.
The leader of Eastern Libya Haphtar plans to grant Turkish companies the right to carry out seismic investigations in marine zones extending from Libya to south of Crete.
If this is confirmed, it clearly highlights that both political centers of the divided African country are following a common strategy on the issue of marine zones based on the illegal and invalid Turkish -ibular memorandum.
It should be noted that the internationally recognized transitional government of Tripoli, which has been controlled by the western part of Libya, has already signed an agreement with Turkey’s state -owned oil company to conduct seismic investigations in sea areas south of Crete.
In addition, the two parties, in full coordination and citing the Turkish -tired Memorandum, have formally challenged Greek sovereignty in areas of Crete’s maritime area.
The European Commission is asked:
What actions do he intend to make for the efforts of both the eastern and western Libya to violate the sovereign rights of Greece and the European Union? “
