Madrid: Over 100,000 protesters at a rally against the Spanish prime minister accused of corruption – “Pedro Sanchez resign”

Tens of thousands of people gathered today (08.06.2025) in Madrid, in a demonstration organized by the Conservative Opposition Party in Spain against the government of the socialist prime minister Pedro Sanchezaccusing him of corruption.

The protesters, many of whom were shaking Spanish flags, gathered in Platha de espania, in the center of the capital in Spain, and shouted “Pedro Sanchez, resign!” while denouncing his government.

The People’s Party (PP) had called on the demonstration after leaking recorded talks showing that a member of the Socialist Party, Leire Dieth, was conducting a defamation campaign for a police unit conducting a survey of his deeds.

She rejected the accusations, telling reporters on Wednesday that she was investigating a book and did not act on behalf of the party or Pedro Sanchez. It also announced its departure from the Socialist Party.

PP leader Alberto Nunyet Feyoo accused the government of “mafia practices” in this case and said Pedro Sanchez was “in the center” of multiple corruption scandals.

“This government has dirted it all – politics, state institutions, the distinction of powers,” he said in the rally before calling Pedro Sanchez to “submit to democracy” and call for early elections.

According to PP estimates, at least 100,000 people participated in the rally, the slogan of which was “mafia or democracy”. A spokesman for the central government in Madrid estimated that 45,000- 50,000 people participated in the rally.

“The expiration date of this government has long passed. This is happening exhaustive, “Blanca Rekeco, a 46 -year -old shopkeeper, told the French Agency at the gathering.

Pedro Sanchez described the investigations involved in members of the narrow circle of the “defamation campaign” launched by the Right to undermine his government.

He came to power in June 2018 after expelling his PP predecessor, Mariano Rajoy, during a vote on a censure proposal in relation to a corruption scandal involving the Conservative Party.

Recent polls show that PP has a small lead over the Socialists. The following parliamentary elections are projected to take place in 2027.
