Lucas Mertens “broke” a historic world record in the 400m. free

One of the oldest world record of swimming, was rejected on Sunday (12.04.2025) in Stockholm – in the homonymous Open – by the amazing, Lucas Mertens.

German Lucas Mertens became the first in history to “go down” 3 minutes and 40 seconds in the 400m. free, as he finished in 3: 39.96.

The Paris Olympian rejected after nearly 16 years in the 3: 40.07 of German Paul Binterman, which had occurred at the time of – forbidden – sophisticated swimwear, specifically on July 26, 2009, at the Rome World Championships.
