According to the General Public Prosecutor’s Office, the authorities “carry out the necessary procedures in the context of their responsibilities, with the aim of safeguarding evidence in coordination with police authorities”.
The historic cable car, popular tourist attraction of the city, derailed and crashed into a building near Avenida da Liberdade around 18.15 on Wednesday afternoon (03.09.2025)
At least 17 people were killed, including foreigners, while newer information is referring to at least 21 injured. Some of them are in serious condition.
The Portuguese newspaper Observador reported that a cable was solved along the cable car route.
Witnesses report that the cable car fell at high speeds on the steep downhill, while one of them described how the wagon was moving “Out of control, no brakes.”
“These small public transport media are accepting a lot of pressure,” he says a guide
In the tragic accident in Lisbon and 17 people were killed, he reported from the point where the tragedy happened, Guide Marina Kalahane – Valente, talking to ERTNEWS and the live now show on George Kakoussi and Nicoletta Cretan.
As he said: “All Portugal is mourning right now, not to tell you the rest of Europe, perhaps because most of the victims were not Portuguese, they came from abroad were tourists. I would like to say that here in Portugal, in Lisbon, which is built on seven hills, there is a great and special variety of public transport, and this great and special variety have shaped the character, identity of the city.
The accident was not made yesterday with one of the trams, it was made with one of the three tooths here in Lisbon and the wagon that crashed yesterday is similar.
It is unpleasant, very unpleasant what happened. In the meantime, let’s not hide, it is one of the very important attractions in the Lisbon area.
And as a guide, like most guides, when we go out and walk with our acquaintances, with friends, along with travelers, we certainly go through this point and propose it, analyze it and reaches a point that offers a spectacular panoramic view of Lissavon.
We can use or recommend it or often use it, I was here on Saturday, for example.
The main function of the cable car has now been suspended and if I think I read well, not only on this dentist, but also to the other two here in the center of Lisbon. The point is that the popularity of Portugal and Lisbon in recent years is so great that many times These small public transport means are very pressure.
Certainly management companies will take all necessary measures. For this particular ascent and descent there are not only wagons every three or so, but there is also a great tail for those who are waiting to taste this unique experience. It’s a nice touch to our daily life and ours and the people of the area. “
Historical attraction
Glória first operated in 1885 and was powered in 1915. It belongs to the three cable car lines managed by the Lisbon Municipal Company, Carris. The system is based on two wagons moving parallel (one moves up and the other descends the hill), tied with steel wiring – making the narrow road temporarily inaccessible to pedestrians and vehicles.
The second cable car was not hit by the accident, but a video taken by passengers showing it violently shaking and opening the doors without being stopped to abandon it by citizens, many of whom had already jumped on the road from the windows.
The cable car is a well -known attraction of the city because of its old construction and its small size, which allows it to cross the paved narrows by transporting about 40 passengers.
