Heavy clashes between opposing armed groups broke out on Monday night (12.05.2025) in its capital Libya, Tripoliby pushing the Ministry of the Interior to appeal to residents to close their homes.
Sporadic fire and average weapon of weapons were heard in Tripoli areas after 9pm (local time; 22:00 Greek time) with the situation in Libya seeing it escaping. No announcements have been made to victims by the authorities.
Without giving details, the Ministry of the Interior of the National Unity Government (CCI), based in Tripoli, called on “all citizens to stay in their homes for their safety”.
According to Libyan media, the conflicts, which unfold in southern areas of the city, broke out among the Tripoli armed groups and rival from Misrata, a large city and port about 200 kilometers east of the capital.
Libya finds it difficult to turn the page of war and chaos that followed the 2011 uprising and the overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi’s regime. It continues to be divided this time, with a government in Tripoli, recognized by the UN, and competitive in the eastern part of the country, accessible to the family of General Khalifa Haphtar.
Although – comprehensively – more stability has been observed for some years, periodic clashes have erupted between some of the myriad of armed groups present in North Africa, in the context of power or influence zones.

Last night, many municipalities in the capital of Libya and its suburbs as well as the University of Libya announced that educational institutions will not operate today and until younger.
Earlier, the UN support mission in Libya and the US Embassy in Tripoli called for a call to restore tranquility, urging “all parts” to “decline”, to “abstain from any challenge” and “resolve them”.
