The prime minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis participated in a teleconference with the Mayor of Amorgos Lefteris Karaiskos, the president of the Amorgos Professional Fisheries Association “Hozoviotissa” Michael and members of the Board of Directors of the Association, on the occasion of the issuance of the Presidential Decree on the implementation of the initiative ‘Amorgororama’, aimed at protecting the island’s marine ecosystem by establishing regulatory measures of fishing activity in the coastal zone of Amorgos.

We have, first of all, arrange to come in early October, because I really want to give a much greater and international publicity to this wonderful initiative that you yourself, protect your seas and thus your own life. Because I think you know better than anyone that if you limit a little and controlling fishing in specific areas and at specific times of the year, you will just have many more fish to fish for the rest of the time.
And because this discussion is, you know, worldwide with a lot of great intensity, but there are few examples of local communities that started with their own, I would say, initiative to take such an action, so I really want to greet and promote this initiative, For what you do, how this initiative started, how you envision its implementation and then, the next step, how we can expand it elsewhere.
Because, as you know, we have already announced two very large and iconic marine parks, one of which is in the southern Aegean, which will also have protection zones, milder in the first place than you do. But, really, my vision will be what you do with such great enthusiasm in Amorgos be able to become a standard and example to imitate many other local communities that are largely relying on fishing».

The chairman of the Board of Directors of the Amorgos Professional Fisheries Association “Hozoviotissa”, Michalis Krisman, noted: “First of all, it is a great honor, not only for us fishermen but for all Amorgos, who feels the support of your own and the Ministry of Rural Development.
