Kyranakis: From September 13th 24 -hour operation on metro buses and trams every Saturday

Since Saturday 13 September 2025- and every Saturday- measurebuses and trams will operate 24 hours a day, announced Konstantinos Kyranakis.

Deputy Minister of Transport Konstantinos Kiranakis, speaking today (01.08.2025) to SKAI, referred to important transit developments, announcing the 24 -hour metro operation every Saturday.

During the interview, Mr Kiranakis also provided answers about the performance of public transport on the heat of the heat, while at the same time, he also talked about ISAP trains, rebuilt in Volos.

“Last summer in MMMs without air conditioning”

Regarding the problems due to heat, Mr Kyranakis said that some wagons at ISAP that are younger and have air conditioning- beyond the trains since 1980 and have no air conditioning- in them, the air conditioning does not perform, which is due to the fact that the world opens up, They are in operation, 32 have air conditioning. ”

Specifically, he said:

“I personally commit that this is the last summer we are experiencing. First of all, it is advisable to ask for the reason for those who ordered a subway without air conditioning. Because these were not ordered in the 4 months that I am in the ministry. Were ordered a few decades ago.

So in Greece, someone had the bright idea of ordering many millions of trains without air conditioning. It is advisable to ask for the reason and from them, at some point – we will go to train renovation measures. That is, some trains will come out of the network – this can affect the frequency, I want to be clean.

When you make a decision and say “I’ll get a train to renovate it”, why you have to make a decision and say “you need air conditioning? Yes, it needs”. I have to get it out of operation, renovate it, change its mechanics and put it back on it. So this will happen. In ISAP we have trains since 1980. “

The end of the trolleys

At the same time, Mr. Kyranakis also referred to the upcoming trolley abolition, explaining that the planning was planned to buy new vehicles, which was undone, as the network (cables and posts) needed to be upgraded, which has increased costs. Following research and consider of the existing situation, he said that the end of the trolleys will be given in the following 2 phases:

  • Cable and Pillars in Athens and Piraeus, beyond large central streets such as Syngrou, where the routes will be thickened,
  • Buying new electric buses, which will replace trolleys

As Mr Kyranakis said, trolley workers will be absorbed on bus.
