“Bougars” are natural geological formations that are a unique and impressive phenomenon that is nowhere else in our country, creating an eerie atmosphere in a corner of the Geopark Kozani – Grevena.
They are located near the village of Mikovalto of the Municipality of Serbia-Velvento (formerly Municipality of Kamvounia), 40 kilometers south of Kozani.
The “bougars” have been created by the corrosion of the area’s rocks over a 70,000 -year -old, forming impressive chimney -like columns.
The earthen columns consist of sand, crocodiles, margins, clay, while their top is covered by a shale plate with a height that can reach up to 7 meters.
Their potential adhesive material are iron oxides and silicon dioxide. The word “bouhari” may come from the Persian word “bakhari” which means chimney.
About one kilometer from “Bougaria” and through a verdant route, they dominate the “Noaches”.
The “Nutritions” are similar conical formations of sharp ridges, resembling small pyramids, but without the shale hat, exceeding 10 meters high. The “knights” extend along the stream of Potamia, on the borders of the Livaderos area and are reminiscent of a miniature of Cappadocia.
A special trail has been formed for better access to the area. The highlight of the area helps to create educational activities and alternative forms of tourism, such as geotourism.
