The seismologist talks about a fault that is under stimulation, resulting in seismic activity for months Kostas Papazachos for them earthquakes which were noted in Agios Oros on Friday morning (13.12.24)
Three earthquakes shook Mount Athos on Friday morning, the first of which was large 3.1 Richterthe second with 3.8 Richter and with him third and greatest 4.6 Richter. In fact, due to the earthquakes, it was decided to close the schools in the municipality of Aristoteli Halkidiki for today.
“Seismic activity in the area of Mount Athos has started since the summer. It didn’t start now, this sequence has been going on for several months. It doesn’t matter that there were three earthquakes in half an hour, it doesn’t matter what time they happen. It’s like when we have a branch and we break it, it often breaks gradually until it finally breaks. So this is not surprising. These areas are common in these seismic sequences and it seems to persist a lot,” emphasizes Kostas Papazachos at newsit.gr.
“Obviously there is cause for concern because we have a sequence that has been going on for months and, as we said, it seems to be persisting. The rift is in agitation and therefore we must be quite careful for the next period, given that there are also the monasteries of Mount Athos, which are both vulnerable as structures and of significant historical value”, he underlines.
When there is an excitation like this, some measures should be taken, the use of such vulnerable buildings should be avoided and an organization should be made so that in the event of a strong seismic vibration there are no problems or consequences”, he points out.
