After all, first TV interview granted the new US ambassador to Greece, Kimberly Guilfoyle. The 56-year-old former prosecutor, speaking to ANT1emphasized that her presence marks a “new era” in Greek-American relations, confirming that large American companies are now very seriously considering the possibility for investments in the country.
Visibly excited by the reception in Greece in the first three months of her term, Ms. Guilfoyle analyzed Washington’s strategic priorities.
Mission from Trump and “balancing” in Piraeus
The ambassador emphasized that Greece, due to its geopolitical position, is “reliable ally” of the USA. He even revealed that he himself President Trump he asked her to come, as he sees that the two countries can work closely together.
The central axis of this cooperation, as he said, is the energy independence (vs Russia and China), which he characterized as equivalent to “national security and sovereignty”.
He gave particular importance to investment interest, characterizing Greece as an “attractive node of stability” in the Balkans. It was even revealing about the goal of these investments:
“It is very important that there is a strong interest in the development of American infrastructure in Greece… Such a development can contribute to balancing Chinese influence to Piraeus“, he said characteristically.
“Wrong decisions” and “mistakes” in the crisis
Referring to the period of financial crisis (and by extension the sale of PPA), Ms. Guilfoyle spoke of a “difficult time” with “intense financial instability”. He justified the actions at the time by saying that “there were no other bidders then”which led to “wrong decisions”. However, he emphasized that “the mistakes made then they can be corrected” and how “there are ways to find solutions with a redesign”.
F-35 and Migrant
Asked about Turkey, the American ambassador explained that at the moment the sale of F-35 in Turkey cannot proceedas well is prohibited by Congressional and Senate legislation. He, however, left the possibility open, saying that “it is something that may change in the future».
Finally, he spoke out clearly against her illegal immigrationemphasizing that she herself is the daughter of legal immigrants from Puerto Rico and Ireland.
