It matures DESFA – ENERGEAN plan for transport and storage of CO2 from industries

The large transfer and storage plan carbon dioxide (CO2) released by the industries, was presented earlier this month by Enearth (Energean) and DESFA in the European Union.

This is the twin project Prinos – Apolloco2, which aspires to store the amount of carbon dioxide from Greece and abroad in the exhausted prin deposit through the construction of appropriate infrastructure. In this way, a major solution will be implemented in our country for the first time that will allow the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, thereby contributing to the achievement of Greek and European climate goals.

The two Greek groups submitted their proposal to be included in the new list of reciprocal and common interest (PCI-PMI) works, which is expected to be published soon. As highlighted, the aim is to support the European effort to create an entire network in the Mediterranean to transport CO2.

The Greek plan has a budget of € 2.17 billion, of which 843 million relate to transport and liquefaction, while € 1.3 billion will be spent on the underground warehouse.

As part of the Apolloco2 implemented by DESFA, the gas will be transported by industries of Attica and Boeotia to a central liquefaction unit in Revithousa through pipelines so that it is subsequently exported by ships. Initially the network will be 200 km long and a capacity of 5 million tonnes per year, and at a later stage it can be upgraded to 10 million tonnes. The goal is to put into operation by 2029.

Correspondingly, Enearth’s warehouse in Prinos will be able to initially accommodate 1 million tonnes from 2026 by transporting compressed CO2 via trucks. By 2029 the capacity will be upgraded to 3 million tonnes when it can receive liquefied quantities by ships.

So far, market interest is intense: In the case of Apolloquo2, seven preliminary deals with customers have already been signed, representing twice as much quantities. Similarly, there are 12 initial deals with customers in Greece, Italy and Croatia for the Prinos warehouse, which exceed 1.9 times the available capacity.

Finally, it should be noted that the preliminary market test is expected to take place this year, and by the beginning of 2026 its binding phase will follow and then the signing of the final contracts.
