“While I was walking in Omonia, a policeman stopped me and told me your identity, please,” she describes to newsit.gr Irini Murtzoukou shortly after she was brought to the AT Omonia.

On Tuesday afternoon (10/12/24), Irini Murtzoukou was brought by police officers from the DIAS team and taken to the Omonia police station to have her information checked, as she did not have her ID with her during a check.

“I was walking in Omonia and a policeman stopped me asking me for your ID please. I didn’t have it on me and so he told me to follow him to the department for a verification of my details” says Irini Mourtzoukou to newsit.gr.

“We went as pedestrians to the department to verify my information. “Let’s go” I replied and “I don’t have any problem”. I went, they saw my details and I left. The department tells me this is how it is done in Athens, it is an identification process. I didn’t know that,” she described.

“People are not doing well at all. They saw me with my head down and my hood on walking through the narrow streets of Omonia and it seemed strange, suspicious. Ok, in the area I was in, things are weird, I get it. They didn’t arrest me. Nothing terrible happened. I’m leaving, I’m going home normally now.”

A little while later, Irini Mourtzoukou was released…
