Intervention Farantouri in Commission for the use of proteins by insects and larvae in food

A question to the European Commission was submitted by the MEP and Member of the Parliamentary Committee on Environment and Food Safety Nicolas Farantouris.
The Greek MEP and professor at the University of Piraeus revealed that on January 20, 2025, the Commission approved further use worms, beetles and insect larvae for the production of flour intended for human consumption. Nikolas Farantouris has been opposed to traffic and consumption in both the genetically modified products and foodflours and pastries using insect proteins and larvae. It has also been against the use of such proteins in poultry, pork, cattle and pets.

Left MEP seeks from Commission Detailed information on the approval of the use on the basis of a decision of the Member States as well as the position of the European Food Safety Authority in relation to the impact of the use of such preparations on health and the nutrition chain.

It also calls for the review of the decision – and in the meantime – the rigorous and compulsory indication of the existence of proteins by insects and worms (larvae) on each food label.
