According to converging bank estimates, more and more taxpayers are paying off their debts from the internet and mobile banking of the banks, with the data showing that in recent years new accounts have been opened on a regular basis, resulting in the number of active users, both online as well as in mobile banking to have now exceeded 3.7 million. Depending on the bank, taxpayers can pay income tax and other debts through the network of ATMs of banks, phone banking, as well as the automatic payment centers of banks. They can of course pay their debts electronically, through the online service of AADE.
Payments elsewhere
Taxpayers have the ability to pay debts to the State through physical presence and the use of cards through the extensive network of ELTA in each prefecture of the country. Taxpayers also have the possibility of immediate service of the payment of installments of certified debts and regulations to the State through the network of approximately 3,000 OPAP stores, through the Wallet payment service, a subsidiary of the OPAP group, which serves the public daily until late in the evening, even on weekends. Through it, a wide range of payments is made, covering a total of transactions for more than 230 institutions and organizations. The payment of the income tax, of ENFIA, as well as of all the accounts, can be made contactless through cards. In this way, the taxpayers are facilitated in securing the tax-free limit.
The total number of active payment cards in circulation in Greece according to data from the Bank of Greece at the end of 2020 amounted to 18.6 million, increased by 3% compared to 2019. In the individual card categories, the number of debit cards increased by 2% and amounted to 15.7 million cards. A significant increase was recorded for the fourth consecutive year in the issuance of prepaid cards, which amounted to 1.7 million, increased by 7%.
The number of credit cards also increased by 9% to 2.9 million. An increase of 38% was recorded in virtual payment cards, which amounted to 100,000 cards.
