Its prime minister India Narendra Monti today announced that his country would “cut water” from rivers stemming from Indian territory but pass and water the Pakistanin retaliation for the long -standing attack on Indian cashmere in late April.
“The water belonging to India has been coming abroad so far. From now on we will stop it to serve India’s interests and use it for our country, ”Monti said in his speech on rivers reaching Pakistan.
India suspended its involvement in a treaty signed in 1960 with Pakistan and was about sharing water, retaliation for armed tourists on April 22 in Pachalgam, which claimed the lives of 26 people. Although no one has taken responsibility for the attack, New Delhi blames Pakistan, who denies any involvement.
The two countries are on the brink of war on the occasion of this attack on civilians. Indians and Pakistani soldiers have exchanged fire for a week along the border.
Earlier, Pakistan has accused India of trying to change the Senab River River, one of the three under the control of Islamabad with the 1960 Treaty. “We noticed changes to Senab, which is not natural (…) The flow of the river is diminished from one day,”
After India decided to unilaterally suspend the treaty, Pakistan warned that any attempt to disturb the flow of its rivers would be considered a “act of war”.
The Pakistani Pantzam province, where almost half of the 240 million Pakistanis inhabit, borders India and is the “heart” of the country’s agricultural production.
The Treaty of Indus gives the new Delhi the right to use the rivers it shares with Pakistan for India’s dams and crops, but not to divert the flow of water or to limit its volume.
