In a particularly warm tone, the Greek minister conveyed the message of the Greek government: “It is a great honor to be in Tripoli today. On behalf of the Greek government and the Greek people, I convey to you a message of peace, friendship and good neighborly. Libya is a natural neighbor for Greece. It is an ally of culture and history, and our aim is to continue the path together for a wider regional security and peace. There are no problems that cannot be resolved through dialogue and those that unite us, such as geography and history, are much more than those that divide us. That is why I look forward to our cooperation and I hope my visit is the beginning of a good and constructive relationship between the two countries and our governments. “
Mr Gerapetritis then added: “Greece can and should be the voice of Libya in Europe and the world.”
During the meeting, the burning issue of immigration was also discussed, as refugee flows from Libya to Crete have been steady increasing lately, burdening regional security and stability in the Mediterranean.
The Greek mission seeks to restore the communication channel between Athens and Tripoli on a realistic trajectory, based on international law, with the aim of peaceful consultation and avoidance of accomplishment in the region, while Greece says it will not accept the boundaries that are ignorant of its sovereignty.
