The US Secretary of Interior, Doug Bergam, will be in Greece in the next 24 hours, as head of the White House energy sovereignty.
According to Kathimerini, this visit highlights Washington’s gravity in collaboration with Athens in the energy sector. As Council sources said, “we see our cooperation with Greece in the field of energy – especially in the LNG sector – as one of the most important in the world.”
Bergam’s visit will be the first member of the New Trump Council of Ministers in Greece and, as noted, the fact that our country has joined its first trip abroad underlines the priority attributed to the Athens -Washington strategic relationship.
Reportedly, the US mission will focus on two critical areas: the LNG and the shipbuilding industry. Regarding LNG, the aim is to consider existing US exports to Greece, their expansion opportunities and their contribution to the achievement of the US -EU trade agreement objectives by $ 750 billion by 2028.
The second sector of interest concerns shipbuilding. Washington is considering working with Greece to exploit Greek know -how to strengthen the American shipbuilding industry. In this context, Bergam is expected to visit Elefsina Shipyards.
According to analysts in Washington, cited by Kathimerini, this initiative is a counterweight to the growing Chinese influence in the shipping sector, with the US prioritizing cooperation with allies such as Greece, which has the largest commercial fleet in the world.
Who is Doug Bergam
Doug Burgum (born August 1, 1956 in Arthur, North Dakota) is a businessman and politician, graduate NDSU (1978) and Stanford MBA (1980).
He made a career in technology as a CEO of Great Plains Software, sold to Microsoft in 2001. He also founded real estate and venture capital companies.
He was governor of North Dakota (2016–2024), and was appointed by Trump as Minister of the Interior and a new “tsar of energy”, influenced by energy policy and public land. It was confirmed and sworn in at early 2025, and immediately initiated initiatives for US “energy sovereignty”.
